What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy enables people to participate in daily life to improve their health and wellbeing. Daily life is made up of many activities (or occupations). Occupations for children or young people may include self-care (getting ready to go out, eating a meal, using the toilet), being productive (going to nursery or school, or volunteering), and leisure (playing with friends or doing hobbies).

Who do occupational therapists help?

Occupational therapists help babies, children and young people who may need support and advice if they are not able to do occupations due to illness, disability, family circumstances, or as a result of changes in their lives as they get older.

School

Occupational therapy enhances engagement and participation in school life. Children and young people learn, play and socialise in school. Whilst most children find participating in activities (or occupations) such as writing a story, playing in the playground or finding their way around the school manageable, these present challenges for some children and young people.

In Highland the Occupational Therapy Service can be contacted via email at childrens.otservice@highland.gov.uk

Stressing Your Senses

This video is of a presentation by Susan Jeffrey from the Highland Occupational Therapy team. The video looks at the role of the occupational therapist, and the everyday things they can support for a child or young person. This includes play & leisure, self-care and education. Susan looks at the different senses and focuses particularly on Interoception - the perception of sensations from inside the body, and how this can differ in children with a neurodevelopmental difference profile. The video is taken from a session led by the National Autistic Society Scotland and Thriving Families on 4 November 2021.
